Musick al’Italliana

MERIDIAN CDE 84316, 1996

Restoration (Rosalind Salas, soprano; Bronwen Pugh, violin; Robert Petre, harpsichord).

Musick al'Italliana is a phrase used by the 17th century English writer Roger North, describing the fashion for Italian music which swept England around the end of that century. This CD, recorded in London for Meridian, presents examples of Italian music, which the English admired for its bold and expressive character, as well as English music modelled on Italian forms or based on popular Italian tunes.  Includes music by Marini, Monteverdi, Gibbons, Philips, Byrd, Carissimi, Matteis, Purcell and Handel.
